Cancer Prevention Study Enrollment Was A Success

In the 1950s, the American Cancer Society (ACS) began conducting cancer prevention studies, following large groups of people over time, to identify and better understand the causes of cancer and find ways to prevent it. Past studies have been the first to show the link between smoking and lung cancer, the first to show the impact of obesity on cancer deaths, and the first to show the link between aspirin and colon cancer prevention.

Residents in our community had an opportunity to participate in the latest research. The American Cancer Society has enrolled participants in its newest research study, the Cancer Prevention Study-3 (CPS-3). Individuals have agreed to make a long-term commitment to the study (which involves completing follow-up surveys periodically over the next 20 - 30 years.) There were four different locations in Utica, Rome and Oneida where participants completed a survey, had their waist measurement taken and had blood drawn for future research.

The community and healthcare staff members stepped up to the plate, as they always do. The enrollment was a wonderful success. A total of 335 participants will be taking part in this important initiative and will help the American Cancer Society provide answers in preventing and curing cancers in the future. Individuals can take pride in knowing they can make a difference for future generations in the fight against cancer.

St. Elizabeth Medical Center had a total number of 100 participants; Oneida YMCA registered 88 people, Faxton St. Luke’s Healthcare had 79 and the Rome YMCA a total of 68 enrolled.
